Utah scuplture to memorialize Susan Powell, kids

WEST VALLEY CITY — Plans are under way for a Utah memorial honoring missing West Valley City mom Susan Cox Powell and her two sons.

The nonprofit Pleasant Green Cemetery in Magna is donating a 15-by-15-foot plot of land for the memorial. Kearns artist Stan Watts has agreed to create the yet-to-be-designed bronze sculpture, which will sit at the entrance of the cemetery overlooking the Salt Lake valley.

Powell’s friend Kiirsi Hellewell is raising funds for the materials in the project. She says the idea is preliminary and she doesn’t know how much money will be needed.

West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder announced the project on Tuesday, less than three weeks after Powell’s children Charlie and Braden died in a Washington house explosion police say was orchestrated by her husband Josh.

In the months before her death, Millard County sheriff’s Deputy Josie Greathouse Fox tape-recorded at least one conversation with her sergeant.
Two of her fellow deputies told Iron County investigators after her death that Fox did so because she believed she had been mistreated and sexually harassed by Sgt. Rhett Kimball. The allegations were part of a broader investigation into an alleged cover-up in the Millard County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Roger Young retired and Detective Bill Jackson was terminated in September after it was determined the two had hindered an investigation into whether Jackson’s father, a felon and registered sex offender, had a gun in his home.

Kimball denied ongoing mistreatment or sexual harassment and spoke for the first time about other allegations made against him as part of an initial investigation begun by Iron County investigators, who had been assigned to the case to avoid a conflict of interest.

“She’s the strongest woman I ever met,” Kimball said. “I don’t feel she would allow anyone to ever sexually harass her.”
But one of Fox’s peers, Millard County Deputy Michael Peacock, saw it differently.
“Josie always had a digital recorder in her pocket, or whatever, because every time she talked to Rhett, she thought she was going to get fired and she was just scared of him,” Peacock told investigators. “She just thought she had to protect herself, and that’s why she had it.”

Peacock said Kimball was “always making sexual comments” to Fox, but he provided only one example to investigators. Peacock, who declined a Salt Lake Tribune interview request, said a citizen once gave deputies videotapes that may have contained child pornography.
Peacock quoted Kimball as saying to Fox: “Well, yeah, after everybody goes home, we can put this video here in the back office, and me and you can turn the lights down and watch this video together.”

Serious accusations aimed at law enforcement in Millard County

When a Millard County sheriff’s sergeant pulled into Bunker Hill Raceway early one morning, a suspected drunken driver jumped out of his car, threw his keys and ran.
But the sergeant was able to coax his suspect out of hiding: The driver was his brother, a Millard County sheriff’s deputy.
Instead of making an arrest, the sergeant drove his brother home, according to an investigative report obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
The 150-page report is part of an investigation into whether Millard County Sheriff’s Office personnel concealed the discovery of a hunting rifle inside the home of a felon who is the father of a Millard County detective. But the report, compiled by Iron County investigators in May and June, shows detectives expanded their investigation when they learned of other possible wrongdoing. In the report, witnesses including Millard County deputies allege:

• The rifle possessed by Merlin Jackson may have been given to him by his detective son.
• The sergeant and his brother are alcoholics who get drunk in public with impunity, and the sergeant once assaulted a teenager at a high school football game while drinking.
• Sheriff’s personnel bypassed the office records system when employees or their families were suspected of crimes.
• A deputy sexually harassed a citizen to the point where she was afraid to call police when she needed assistance.
Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker on Saturday said his office investigated some claims while referring others to other county or state agencies, whose decisions are pending.
“I don’t let people just get away with things,” Dekker said in an interview with The Tribune.
Some of the allegations, if true, might constitute criminal offenses. Others would only be violations of Utah’s police conduct code.
“I would hope and I pray that every sheriff’s office isn’t like this,” Millard County Deputy Dale Josse, who is not accused of wrongdoing, told investigators, “because I think it’s just so out of hand now. When I took this job ... I did not have this in mind at all and I think in some cases we’re worse than these people we’re arresting because we’re the one hired to do the job.”

3-Brother of slain deputy Josie Greathouse Fox found dead in Las Vegas

The brother of slain Millard County sheriff's deputy Josie Greathouse Fox — and a potential key witness in her pending murder case — was found dead in Las Vegas on Thursday.
The Clark County Coroner's Office confirmed that the body of Ryan Greathouse, 40, was found Thursday in the bedroom of an apartment.
Police are actively investigating Greathouse's death, but Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Castle said he could not comment on how or in what condition the body was found.
Greathouse, of Leamington, Millard County, was pronounced dead around 1 p.m., but investigators had not yet determined the cause of death, a coroner's official said.
The Millard County Sheriff's Office was notified Thursday of Greathouse's death. Sheriff Robert Dekker told KSL he had the sad duty to again inform the Greathouse family of another child's death.
Fox died on Jan. 5 after being shot when she stopped a suspected burglar near Delta. Roberto Roman, 37, has been charged with capital murder in the case.
Her brother had reportedly purchased drugs from Roman just minutes before the deadly confrontation with Fox.
Before the shooting, Fox and another deputy were watching two suspicious vehicles near an area where a string of thefts had taken place, Dekker said. One of the vehicles belonged to Greathouse, according to court documents.
The other deputy followed Greathouse's vehicle, then drove to where Fox had stopped the other vehicle. When he arrived, however, the deputy found Fox lying in the road, and the vehicle she had stopped was gone, Dekker said.
Fox was pronounced dead at the scene.
Greathouse was never charged in connection with the alleged drug deal.
During a statewide manhunt for Roman and the other suspect, Ruben Chavez-Reyes, 36, it was Greathouse who informed investigators what car Roman was driving, according to a search warrant filed in 3rd District Court. Greathouse also informed investigators that he had purchased drugs from Roman just before his sister was shot.
Greathouse claimed Roman told him he would "shoot a cop if they stopped" him, the warrant states. He also said he observed an AK-47 and a Baretta semi-automatic weapon in the car with Roman and had recently been to Roman's house and witnessed an AR-15 in his possession.
Attorneys involved in the case against Roman and Chavez-Reyes would not comment on the impact Greathouse's death may have.

Three were on private property and 11 on public land.
"In 2010, the federal appeals court in Denver said the crosses were an unconstitutional endorsement of Christianity by the state government and ordered the crosses removed from public land. A three judge panel said the crosses would leave any "reasonable observer" with the impression or fear that "Christians are likely to receive preferential treatment" from the Utah Highway Patrol." as referenced by KSTU-TV.
The judges added: “The reasonable observer’s fear of unequal treatment would likely be compounded by the fact that these memorials carry the same symbol that appears on UHP patrol vehicles.”
The decision notes that most residents of Utah were raised as or are followers of the Mormon religion, which does not view the cross as a religious symbol.
The judges noted that “cross-revering Christians comprise. approximately 18 percent of the population of Utah.”But they went on to stress that the state could still violate the establishment clause by promoting the cross and the religious groups that do revere While most roadside memorials marking traffic fatalities are 12 to 16 inches high, the troopers’ crosses are 10 times that size, the court said. “The massive size of the crosses displayed on … public property unmistakably conveys a message of endorsement, proselytization, and aggrandizement of religion that is far different from the more humble spirit of small roadside crosses,” the court said.
The judges said they were also concerned that the memorials included the insignia of the Utah Highway Patrol. They said the combination of the cross and insignia links the state with a particular religious symbol. And that, they said, “may lead the reasonable observer to fear that Christians are likely to receive preferential treatment from the UHP – both in their hiring practices and, more generally, in the treatment that people may expect to receive on Utah’s highways.”

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on Monday declined to return to the divisive question of when religious symbols are allowed on government property, rejecting a dispute over the placement of large white crosses on Utah roads to commemorate fallen troopers.

Over the lone dissent of Justice Clarence Thomas, the court left in place a lower court decision that said the Utah crosses violated the separation of church and state.

"Today the court rejects an opportunity to provide clarity to an Establishment Clause jurisprudence in shambles," Thomas wrote, referring to the constitutional prohibition against government enacting laws that establish, or endorse, religion.

In an unusually long, 19-page objection to the court's action, Thomas emphasized that lower court judges are split over how to interpret the justices' rules in this area and he expressed sympathy for a Utah patrol association's efforts to memorialize slain officers.

Cases in this area of the law tend to inspire public passion and produce close rulings with complicated legal rationales. As Thomas suggested, the new case would have given the justices a chance to clarify standards for displays of Latin crosses and the Ten Commandments.

The crosses in Utah are 12-feet high, 6-feet wide, and display in black lettering the name of the trooper, badge number, and year of death. The crosses are also marked with the name and beehive symbol of the Utah Highway Patrol.

A group of atheists sued, claiming the placement of symbols of Christianity on public grounds was unconstitutional.

The state said it was not endorsing religion by allowing the Utah Highway Patrol Association to erect the crosses, rather it was memorializing the highway officers who died in the line of duty.

The Utah Legislature, after the lawsuit began, passed a resolution noting that a white cross "has become widely accepted as a symbol of a death, and not a religious symbol, when placed along a highway."

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit ruled for the atheists, concluding that the 13 cross memorials could convey to a "reasonable observer that the state of Utah is endorsing Christianity."

The appeals court noted that each memorial uses "the pre-eminent symbol of Christianity" and "conspicuously bears the imprimatur of a state entity, the UHP."

"The fact that the cross includes biographical information about the fallen trooper does not diminish the governmental message endorsing Christianity," the appeals court wrote. "This is especially true because a motorist driving by one of the memorial crosses at 55-plus miles per hour may not notice, and certainly would not focus on, the biographical information. The motorist, however, is bound to notice the preeminent symbol of Christianity and the UHP insignia, linking the state to that religious sign."

When the 10th Circuit denied the patrol association's request for a rehearing, dissenting judges who wanted to reconsider the matter said the majority appeared to be trying to purge from the public sphere anything related to religion.

In its appeal to the high court, the Utah Highway Patrol Association urged the court to clarify the rules for determining when a public display might signal endorsement of religion. The association said lower court judges have been particularly confused by the Supreme Court's rationale from a pair of 2005 rulings.

Six years ago, by separate 5-4 decisions, the high court struck down the posting of the Ten Commandments on plaque at two Kentucky courthouses, yet ruled that a granite Commandments monument on the grounds of the Texas Capitol could stay.

In 2010, a dispute over a cross erected in the Mojave National Preserve came before the justices. While that case did not yield a ruling on the constitutionality of the cross on federal land, a five-justice majority voiced a rationale that could in future cases bolster government's ability to allow religious symbols on public land.

The impact of the crash caused the red car to flip and the driver, identified as Abel Linfernal, was critically injured.
Eslinger said Miller's wife is overcome by grief. That feeling is echoed by those in uniform.
"For us to have to investigate a crash where another law enforcement officer has been killed, it's devastating," Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said.

My theory of all you have aknowledge on eating, diet, weight loss, and flating your belly.

Calories matter, not only as a source of energy, as an anti-aging factor, body fat, but also consider factors of age, body frame, body weight, gender , and gene.

Calories are the fuel to push one further during the entire day, the less one take the longer one can live. How complicated this idea, very much so as proving facts by federal funded research on anti-aging.. Shorting yourself of necessary daily calories will not speed up the longivity of you life term. What can we do to manoeuver around necessarry daily calories along with reaching out for longer living?. It is not about looking young, what the positive results of the research show is that one will live longer not necessarily look younger if the daily intake of colories is of equal or less than the daily recommended one must intake.

To create your strategy to steer around what the standard theory of calories intake to body weight, age, frame, and other factors given etc., you need to cut the calories into as many small amount of intake as possible. let's say for example one need to be on a weight loss diet, so the doctor recommende that he/sh only intake 1700 caloried per day. you can do di it as the standard by divding the amount to three separte occasions throughout the day. I know you jump so far that "you know it all' and all that make comon sence. Weel, you need to enter the door from the back or the front , it doesn't really matter, my ex-wife boyfriend one Jack miller from AZ, he was born in the toillette, so he just leave from the toillette, and go back to the toillette.

My theory is that the amount recommended to be divided to as many as what some call(munchies throughout the day) but make to small meals to increase the metabolisim, and to continue on with the energy needed to keep you going through the day. I fluctuate calories from one day to another using the amount needed. For example instead of taking all that of 1700 calories in one day, I do 1400 one day, and 2000 in the next day.

Using the fluctuation technique will maintain an average daily energy balace to continue having a buffer supporting the emmune system.

To perform the side static hold roll onto one side of your body and lift into the same position as before, but this time only one arm will be on the ground with the other arm pointed straight up the air and your non-weught beating leg resting in your bottom leg once again, hold this for as long as possible.

The Basics

The same basic form holds true regardless of your current strength level or variation you're using.

Set up with the knees either directly on or slightly behind the pad, with the feet firmly on the platform and the back of the calves pressed lightly against the upper ankle hook.

Begin with the torso perpendicular to the floor.

Next, squeeze the hamstrings, glutes, and abs, and lower under control until the torso is parallel to the floor.

From there, return to the starting position by pushing the toes into the foot plate (which activates the gastrocnemius) and pulling up with the hamstrings. Be sure to keep the glutes contracted.

I like to use two cues that apply to both the setup and execution of this exercise: get straight, and get long (get your mind out of the gutter, sicko). The goal is to maintain a straight line through the knee, hip, shoulder, and neck at all times. To achieve this straightness, think about making the body as long as possible.

The two most common form flaws are breaking at the hips and hyperextending through the lumbar spine, both of which come from not being strong enough in the hamstrings and glutes to maintain proper body alignment. If you find yourself feeling this exercise a lot in the lower back, it's a safe bet you're doing it wrong.
